Bl. Fulton Sheen Icon
The Fulton Sheen Icon depicts the American archbishop, theologian, writer and one of the most recognisable Catholic preachers of the 20th century. Fulton Sheen is shown in episcopal vestments, wearing a pectoral cross and holding a book. The gold halo and luminous background emphasise the sacred character of the image, while the rich magenta tones refer to his episcopal ministry.
The composition combines traditional elements of iconography with a clear, contemporary representation of a churchman whose radio and television ministry reached millions of people. The icon can be displayed in a home prayer space, study, library, parish office or priest’s room.
Bl. Fulton Sheen Icon on a gilded linden wood panel
The icon is made on a solid linden wood panel, carefully prepared before the next stages of production. The surface is hand-gilded, giving the background a distinctive, slightly irregular texture that changes subtly depending on the angle and intensity of the light.
The image of Fulton Sheen is applied using direct printing on the gilded linden wood panel. It is not a paper reproduction glued onto the surface; the image is printed directly onto the prepared and gilded board.
The visible texture of the gilding means the background is not perfectly smooth or mechanically uniform. These subtle variations are a natural part of the finish and give each icon its own individual character.
Archbishop Fulton Sheen – preacher, writer and media pioneer
Fulton J. Sheen was born in Illinois in 1895. He was a theologian, lecturer, author of more than 70 books and one of the pioneers of using radio and television for Catholic evangelisation.
He became especially well known through his television programme “Life Is Worth Living”, in which he spoke about faith, conscience, marriage, freedom, responsibility and the challenges of modern life. One of his greatest strengths was his ability to explain demanding theological and moral questions in a way that remained accessible to a broad audience.
Behind his public ministry stood a disciplined spiritual life. For decades, Sheen devoted one hour every day to Eucharistic adoration and considered this time of prayer one of the principal sources of his preaching.
His beatification is scheduled for 24 September 2026 in Saint Louis, Missouri.
Fulton Sheen Icon for the home, study and prayer space
The icon can be placed in a home prayer corner, study, library, parish office, catechetical room or priest’s room.
Its gold background and deep magenta tones work particularly well with natural wood, warm neutrals and understated interiors. The icon may be displayed on its own or combined with a cross, the Holy Scriptures or other images of saints and blesseds.
Fulton Sheen may be especially meaningful to people involved in preaching, education, media and evangelisation. His life shows that the use of modern means of communication can remain firmly rooted in prayer and sacramental life.
Fulton Sheen Icon as a religious gift
The Fulton Sheen Icon can be a meaningful gift for a priest, catechist, theologian, teacher, journalist or anyone involved in evangelisation and media.
It may be given for priestly ordination, an ordination anniversary, a priestly jubilee or the beginning of a new pastoral ministry. It can also be a thoughtful gift for someone who reads Fulton Sheen’s books and values his teaching.
The image is particularly fitting for people who work with words and communication. It recalls an archbishop who spoke to millions of listeners and viewers while remaining convinced that one of the most important hours of his day was the one spent in silence before the Blessed Sacrament.
