Get acquainted with the story behind the Mandylion icon, which is based on a 12th-century painting from Novgorod, currently held in the Tretyakov Gallery collection. This exquisite reproduction has been created with meticulous attention to detail to capture the true essence of the original icon.

According to legend, the Mandylion is associated with the tale of King Abgar V, the ruler of Edessa, who suffered from leprosy. He sent his servant Ananias to Jesus, whose reputation as a miraculous healer had already spread, requesting Him to come from Judea. However, Jesus was unable to fulfill the king's request, as He stated in a letter. Jesus also promised that after His death, one of His disciples (Tadeus is mentioned) would visit Abgar to heal him. The letters exchanged (Abgar's letter to Christ and Christ's letter to Abgar) were often circulated as amulets in the Christian world, albeit in slightly altered versions. The authenticity of the correspondence was later questioned. In later versions of the legend (starting from the 6th century), it is mentioned that if Christ couldn't come, Abgar asked his envoy to create a portrait of Him. However, the messenger failed to paint the Savior's face in Jerusalem. Then, Christ pressed the cloth to His face, creating a portrait that healed the king upon contemplation.
