Our Lady of the Gate of Dawn Icon on Limewood
This icon depicts Our Lady of the Gate of Dawn, one of the most recognisable Marian images associated with Vilnius. Mary is shown without the Child Jesus, with Her head gently bowed and Her hands crossed over Her chest. Her figure is surrounded by golden ornamentation, rays and stars, with a distinctive crescent moon at the bottom of the composition.
The icon is made on a carefully prepared and primed limewood board. The image of the Mother of Mercy is applied using direct-to-wood printing, while the gilded details are finished by hand. The combination of natural wood, a warm dark background and elaborate golden decoration gives the icon an elegant and devotional character.
What Does the Icon of Our Lady of the Gate of Dawn Depict?
Mary is portrayed in a peaceful attitude of prayer and contemplation. Her hands crossed over Her chest are traditionally interpreted as a sign of humility, trust in God and readiness to accept His will. Her serene expression and lowered eyes emphasise the contemplative nature of the image.
A radiant halo with stars surrounds Mary, while crowns adorn Her head. History of Our Lady of the Gate of Dawn
The icon is inspired by the seventeenth-century painting venerated in the Chapel of the Gate of Dawn in Vilnius, Lithuania. The original image bears the title Mother of Mercy and is also known as the Madonna of the Gate of Dawn or the Vilnius Madonna.
For centuries, the image has been venerated by pilgrims, and its copies can be found in numerous churches and homes in Poland and other countries.
Our Lady of the Gate of Dawn also holds a special place in Polish religious and cultural tradition. Adam Mickiewicz referred to Her in the opening invocation of his epic poem “Pan Tadeusz” with the words: “Holy Virgin, who shines in the Gate of Dawn.”
