Who Was St Elizabeth Ann Seton?
Elizabeth Ann Seton was born in New York City in 1774. She married William Magee Seton and became the mother of five children. Following her husband’s death, she encountered Catholicism more closely during her stay in Italy. Faith in the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist held particular significance for her. In 1805, she was received into the Catholic Church.
In 1809, Elizabeth and her companions settled in Emmitsburg, Maryland, where they established the Sisters of Charity of St Joseph’s—the first community of religious women founded in the United States. Her work contributed to the development of Catholic education and assistance for people experiencing poverty.
St Elizabeth Ann Seton died on 4 January 1821. Pope Paul VI canonised her on 14 September 1975, making her the first native-born citizen of the United States to be declared a saint. Her liturgical memorial is observed on 4 January.
