Who Was Blessed Michael J. McGivney?
Michael J. McGivney was born on 12 August 1852 in Waterbury, Connecticut, to a family of Irish immigrants. He was ordained a priest in 1877. Throughout his ministry, he showed particular concern for families, people experiencing poverty and those affected by illness or the death of their family’s primary provider.
In 1882, he founded the Knights of Columbus, a Catholic fraternal organisation whose work is based on the principles of charity, unity and fraternity. He died on 14 August 1890 at the age of only 38.
Father Michael J. McGivney was beatified in Hartford on 31 October 2020. His liturgical memorial is observed on 13 August.
