Who Was St John Henry Newman?
St John Henry Newman lived from 1801 to 1890. He was an English clergyman, theologian, writer and one of the most influential Christian thinkers of the nineteenth century. He was ordained a Catholic priest in 1847 and was created a cardinal by Pope Leo XIII in 1879. His writings explored the relationship between faith and reason, the role of conscience, education and the development of Christian doctrine.
Newman was beatified by Pope Benedict XVI in 2010 and canonised by Pope Francis on 13 October 2019. In 2025, Pope Leo XIV proclaimed him a Doctor of the Church, recognising the enduring importance of his teaching for Christians.
